The cotton used in our store for futon mattress (shiki futon) is called desi cotton, which is a native Indian cotton that is resilient and suitable for use in futon.
There are two types of desi cotton, organic and non-organic (we call it "natural cotton" for convenience). There is no particular difference in the function of both types of cotton when used as a material for futons, except for organic cotton is slightly softer.
The price of organic cotton used to be high, but in recent years it has been approaching the price of non-organic cotton.
Organic futon is often chosen by these customers.
- Customers whose skin is sensitive to chemicals
- Futons for babies and children
- Customers who are conscious about environmental protection
Organic cotton filling
This is organic raw cotton before cotton husk and leaf litter are removed.
It is produced by the bioRe PROJECT in India, which is known as one of the largest and most progressive projects in the world and has won numerous international awards.
It is certified by GOTS (GLOBAL ORGANIC TEXTILE STANDARD) standards.
We have achieved Oeko-Tex® certification class 1 in 2023.
Non-organic cotton filling
This is non-organic raw cotton before cotton husk and leaf litter are removed. This is also a high quality cotton that we have selected and purchased based on our many years of experience.
We have achieved Oeko-Tex® certification class 1 in 2023.
Q. How do you process these raw cotton and make futon?
A. Please watch this YouTube video to find out. Cotton carding (the process of removing debris from raw cotton and processing it into sheets of cotton) is a Japanese technique that is rare in the world. As traditional futon shops are closing down, the number of factories in Japan with carding machines is decreasing. We are becoming a rare species!
Q. Which futon is the most popular choice in Japan?
A. In Japan, non-organic cotton futons used to be the mainstream choice, but in recent years, more and more people are choosing organic cotton.
Q. Can I change a product made of non-organic cotton to organic?
A. Yes, it is possible depending on the product. Please contact us.
(It is basically impossible to replace an organic cotton filling with a non-organic cotton filling.)
Q. Even if it's organic cotton filling, what's the point if the fabric of the futon is not organic?
A. Yes, understand what you mean. Yet, it seems that people who are sensitive to chemicals feel the difference. We also have a futon which fabric is also organic. We also sell organic covers.
Q. I would like to have samples of both types of cotton.
A. Yes. We will send you a palm-sized piece of cotton. Please make a request here.
